Career We Go x PUNDIT: Gianluca Zambrotta

Career We Go and PUNDIT are teaming up to give you the greatest football trivia quiz out there. The player for August 27 is the Italian defender Gianluca Zambrotta. Read about him right here.

Gianluca Zambrotta is the quintessential Italian defender. Strong and reliable, he became part of Rijkaard's FC Barcelona but was quickly discarded when Pep Guardiola was appointed at Camp Nou speaking to what qualities Zambrotta possessed and maybe did not posses. Maybe Guardiola saw his pass to Scholes at Old Trafford as a signal, that he was surplus to requirements?

Nevermind Zambrotta's time in Spain, it is his almost 300 appearances for Juventus that makes him a part of the conversation when speaking of Italian defenders. He would return to Italian football with AC Milan after his stint in Spain where he would become integral in his first season while becoming a squad player for the Championship winning season in 2010/11.

Zambrotta's national team career also speaks volumes of a player that was cherished for his versatility, playing on either flank with no problem. 98 appearances and playing in both the 2006 World Cup final and playing all games at the Euros in 2008.
