Scouted by German club Stuttgart with his brother, while turning out for Belarussian BATE Borisov, and quickly made his name as the player in the hole behind the strikers.

Signed by Arséne Wenger, he became a regular for the Gunners during his three seasons there. He was then signed by Barcelona, but never became a success at Camp Nou spending one season under Pep Guardiola rarely playing - being loaned out to three different clubs during his tenure in Spain.

Since then, Hleb became a journeyman plying his trade for various Turkish and Belarussian sides, ending his career at Isloch Minsk Raion in 2019.
